Martin

I have got to say that I like Martin Luther King Day. Why? It’s because this is still somewhat a solemn where people can reflect on history and prejudices. Yeah, yeah, let’s all sing Kumbaiya…I can hear you out there. But MLK day still hasn’t been ruined commercially like all the other holidays.

I bet and hope we will never see a MLK Day White Sale at Macy’s. Holidays as solemn as Veterans Day and Memorial Day are ripe with commercial come-ons. Furniture stores and department stores shamelessly shill their wares debasing the days of respect they are meant to be.

Sure, I am anti war and against killing and all that stuff, but even as irreverent as I may be I would never commercially or verbally defile those who have spent several years of their lives or given their limbs or lives in our military service.

I won’t be buying a new car, a bed or a couch on Veterans Day or Memorial Day, no matter how good the deal. I hope this crass commercialism continues to keep its hands off Martin Luther King Day. But think of it…How long can that be avoided?

I'd rather have a MLK Day here in Canada than Victoria Day. Far more relevant and meaningful - he touched the world. Victoria Day (in May) is the official celebration of Queen Victoria's birthday (and that was how long ago??!!) as well as Queen Elizabeth II's. Basically, it's an excuse for a long weekend in May.

Being Subjects of the Crown, do citizens have any loby power over things as such? I figured you'd have a Dianna Day by now.

When I was a child we had Lincoln's Day and Washington's day. Then they were changed to President's day, and then when MLK day becane a national holiday, President's day became an unpaid national holiday.

What I want to know is why is Christmas a National Holiday?

I never wondered about this, but you're so right. There are Columbus Day sales, aren't there?

Interesting thing about Columbus Day. Since it was found that Columbus never set foot in North America a loby started to remove that day from the holiday list. However a stronger loby in the form of the Sons of Italy and the Knights of Columbus have prevented this from being removed as Columbus is a native son of Italy and instills great pride in the Italian-American community. There were a lot of Italian Americans where I grew up, and you learn very early that there is no such thing as the mafia and Columbus is a super star.

I hope that it is someday changed to Libery Day, Or Country Inservice Day, or something like that.
Martin King was one teency weency spec in this country's evolution.
If we are going to drop Licoln and Washingtons name, who had far more impact on this country, we should drop King's name and respect all people that fight for freedom, liberty and equality.

I took the day to give my eight-year-old a brief history lesson on MLK. Since she already knew who Rosa Parks was, it was a good progression into the whole civil rights movement.

What on earth kind of advertising tie-in, however, would some business dare to make with the birthday of an assassinated man??? I KNOW Lincoln was, too, but, like, that was in the 19th century???? Okay, point well taken. Sign me up to work overtime at the MLK shoe sale...

Sigh.

Mo3 They are getting close, lots of places had three day sales without attaching a name to it...yet. Watch it over the next couple of years and see who will break the barrier.

BTW, anyone watch the Daily Show last night. I think the commentator read this post.
